World Cup 2006

Sunday, May 29, 2005

So I've just seen on the news (yes, I missed this one as well) that England narrowly beat the USA 2-1. What's that about then? Was it a second eleven side? I know that we've lost to the USA before, but that was a one off wasn't it? Shouldn't we be disappointed that we let a goal in - especially from someone called Clint Dempsey and Makepeace.

Anyway, I've just watched the whole of The Three Amigos (our Sunday afternoon matinee) so I don't think I have any authority to comment on anything, ever.

I was trying to remember what happened between England and Azerbaijan a few weeks ago (since I don't intend to do anything as predictable as a post-match write-up). I had to look it up and found that "England suffered 45 minutes of frustration before beating Azerbaijan at St James' Park with goals from Steven Gerrard and David Beckham." Did I watch that?

Anyways, that came a few days after England beat Northern Ireland 4-0. Goals: Joe Cole 47, Owen 52, Baird 54 og, Lampard 62. I must have watched that as well. Rings a bell.

After the excitement of the FA Cup Final and the Champions League Final, I feel that I'm not alone in being footballed out at the end of a long hard season. All that extra time, all those penalties, all those crisps... it takes its toll.

But it's not over yet. England have two friendlies over the next week. We're playing the USA in Chicago on Saturday 28th May and Colombia in New York on Tuesday 31st May. It's utterly pointless of course but Sven has to pretend that it's a valuable opportunity to give fringe players (i.e no hopers) a chance to impress. Come on down, Peter Crouch! Good luck Kieran Richardson!

Champions Leg

Well what a game, eh? Not that I watched it, well it was 4.30 in the morning over here and the mornings are cold these days. Staying in bed was the better option.

Plus I would have wanted to have a beer to replicate that special World Cup 2002 feeling of being midly pissed at 5 in the morning watching football.

I sort of watched it though, if you can call trying to tell which team is which in the fuzzy replays of the goals on the Interweb watching it.

We have a guy at work who is a big Liverpool fan so he was chuffed. The sparky is an AC Milan Fan though, so he was pissed off.

My hands are shaking, I will have an egg sandwich, that'll help.
