It looks awfully glamorous.

I saw AUS BRA in a trendy club. It cost seven quid to get in, and then it took half a bleeding hour to get a drink. Never again.

It was (surprise) full of Brazilians and Aussies. I was very much on the Sheilaroos' side, but despite a brave performance, it wasn't to be. I was thinking of you, propping up your eyelids at 3 in the morning, chuckling away at fatty Ronaldo.

Right now there is TOG SWI online, but I can't raise much enthusiasm for that. They're closing down the Brazillians quite effectively, but let's not forget that Brazil are also not making the most of some of their chances. They need to start taking some more risks though.

The earlier game between Croatia and Japan was a draw, so Australia can lose this and still go through to the 2nd round if they draw against Croatia. I think Guus should bring on Kewell at some point in the 2nd half.

All of a sudden qualification seems possible.

I was going to take a photo of the game, but there was nothing of note in the replays, so here's a shot of the view from my hotel room instead. Big if you're Australian that is.

Last time they were in the World Cup they pulled off a "monumentous" draw against Chile. Ok, yes that's right I said Chile, and what they don't tell you whenever they recount that match on the TV is that it was a 0-0 draw. Yes that's right, in the 1974 World Cup they didn't win a game and didn't score a goal.

But that's supposed to all change today.

Japan is a must win game for Australia. You don't fancy them getting anything from the Brazil tie, and Croatia will be a tough ask, so a draw probably won't cut it for the Socceroos.

I've put them down to lose in my tipping contest. He (Dracula) got a few swear words amogst our group. I was particularly annoyed by the way Peter Crouch would get penalised for anything like scratching his arse. It's exhausting, but I'm proud of myself for putting in the hours.

England was not all that good in my estimation and Sven's substitutions were questionable, and his decision not to take a fifth striker was shown up for the MISTAKE he'll never admit it is. Still, a win is three points and we can only improve.

You'll be pleased to hear I swore vociferously at the fussy Mexican referee, especially when he yellow carded Steven Gerrard. We played too many long balls and lost possession too much, especially in the hot conditions, I thought. The studio guests said that Sven's years in Italy meant that he's content to defend a one goal lead - but what about the players?

The most ridiculous moment though was when Paul Robinson kicked the ball upfield and it bounced back at him off the hi-tech video screen thing hanging miles above the stadium.

Sweden v Trinidad & Tobago being a 0-0 was the best result for England. T&T did extremely well, and I was delighted they got a result after going down to ten men shortly after half time. Shaka Hislop was excellent after being called in to replace the number one choice keeper, who tripped over going into the changing room or something.

Talking of goalkeeping heartbreaks, you had to feel sorry for the Paraguay keeper who went off after only six minutes against England after doing himself a mischief following a clearance.

After SWE TRI there wasn't much of a rest before ARG CIV (Argentina v Ivory Coast). Are there any World Cup three letter abbreviations which could make up a proper word - like if Wales and Russia were to play it would be WAL RUS? Never mind.

ARG CIV was another ITV game, and their commentators are really annoying me. It's never bothered me much before but the crass comments and pathetic attempts at humour are doing my head - Tyldesley and (yes) Drury are the offenders. A poll on the BBC website (no bias then) comes out 90% in favour of the BBC coverage so far.

I'd have liked the Ivory Coast to have got a result but Argentina were deserving 2-1 winners. They look top quality. The Elephants look very useful too, and are still very capable of qualifying from a tough group.

After all that was Rio's World Cup Wind-Ups (ITV of course), where Rio Ferdinand played Beadlesque prankster tricks on his unsuspecting England mates. It was terrible and I really enjoyed it.

World Cup fever!

I am almost overwhelmed by the fever.

The country is gone mad.

It's also the hottest day of the year. Or if the scorekeeper is troubled, it's normally for a scrappy penalty area fumble or painful deflection. We're certainly not used to long-range thunderbolts like Philip Lahm's opening curler, or Fring's decisive final blow. ("Fring's that make you go hmmmm" as the Sun's back page perhaps?)

And linesmen getting it right, what the? Wanchope was definitely offside wasn't he? Well that's what I was saying to the dog on the sofa when I saw his first goal, but the replay told another story - a very tight but 100% accurate decision.

The Germans looked pretty good. Ok so their defense wasn't all that watertight, but they played well. Who do you think you are kidding Jurgen Klinsmann? On this occasion, nobody. What a great start to a World Cup management career.

The new ball? Well the Drury's still out on that one. Being 'keeper unfriendly might make the game more excting, but did you see how much it moves in the air on those long range kicks? You want the goalie to have some chance of stopping the shot - if the ball is moving around its original trajectory during flight how can he be expected to get a solid block to it? I forsee goals going in this year that would have been stopped previously. Probably the first of which being a last minute strike from Paraguay tomorrow.

A great game on it's own merit, but all the more appealing as the opener to an already exiting tournament.

Now back to bed.

I just ignored my own advice and entered the work sweepstake as well. $10 entry and $320 to the winner. Other than that, the office sweepstake takes place tomorrow, in the kitchen, two pounds each, big hat. Last night, I dreamed that I picked out Saudi Arabia and pretended I was happy about it.

The BBC (bless em) are showing all their games LIVE online so people can watch in the office, while pretending to work. Only available to UK internet users (licence fee thing). Is Aussie TV showing everything? There was some whinger on telly this morning going on about the £100m British business will lose by people watching the World Cup. Where's it going exactly? And who's losing it? I'd gladly pay £100m to win the World Cup. Just like Roman Abramovich's happy to fork out £200m to win the Premiership the Champions League and the Grand National.

London is awash in flags, hanging from windows, attached to cars. Then immediately afterwards I received another one from Fox Sports about their fantasy league. Then there's the one on the Fifa website.

My inital reaction was to enter them all, but what with juggling work and waking up at 2am for the matches I need to concentrate on just one.

So I'm going all out on the work competition. There are less entrants, there is a 1 in 20 chance of a $400 prize, and beating people you know is always much more fun.

Now I need to determine my strategy - do I go for the obvious winners or do I look to slide away from the group with a few controversial choices (Germany losing to Costa Rica perhaps)? I've put in all of my tips for the group games, but I'm bound to change my mind after seeing a few teams play. Perhaps Equador will be a surprise qualifier, could Korea beat France, and shock horror perhaps England will win their first game - nah, that never happens.

2 days to go, I need a wee I'm that excited.

The real Soccer Roo

Will he, won't he? You forget after a while how good some of theose games actually were. Like hitting the woodwork in extra time against the Germans in 1990, Shilton stumbling backwards after the lucky deflection, Psycho's penalty kick, Gazza's tears. Wonderful times.

There was something special about football in the 90's for me. Perhaps because that's when I started having distinct World Cup memories of my own rather than from replays (although Platt's extra time 1986 goal against Belgium is probably my earliest memory - I was sat at home in our living room and sepcifically remember jumping out of the chair when he turned under Gazza's cross and guided it home. I was on my own, the rest of the family didn't like football, and I was too young to be in the pub at that stage). Or perhaps it's because I was always a massive Lineker and Gazza fan (the Spurs connection helped) or perhaps because of Euro '96, I mean come on. That was the best tournament of all time, World Cups included. I don't think football for me will ever have a better decade than the 90's.

Now I feel all nostalgic. Even I have never done such a thing. You know, sorry for the lad, but at least he's easily replaced and we'll hardly know he's missing.

A disappointing affair by all accounts (apart from Sven's account in which case it was a very useful affair, apart from the losing bit, although that isn't important). I didn't watch it. I only saw the 'highlights' on Sky Sports News. I'm saving myself for the big matches. Marathon not a sprint!

I was watching the Sopranos instead because I bid for all five box sets on eBay, and I won them, at a ridiculous price (ok, so they arrived from China and there are a few typos on the packaging, but never mind that, they're at least 99 per cent legit). So that's what I'll be mainly doing instead of watching Big Brother 7. I really can't be putting the time in with that as well as the World Cup.

I have also avoided ITV's ridiculous Soccer Aid, which has been on all this week. As far as I can gather, it's celebs and ex-players goofing about for charity. Robbie Williams is involved. I read that Maradona is making a surprise appearance in the 'Final' which is tomorrow, so I'll keep an eye out for that. Just one eye.

Rooney's toe scan results expected any minute... we are anticipating a mighty battle as Fergie refuses to let him go whatever the outcome. Best chance looks like he could be fit to play in about a month (UPDATE: he won't know for another three weeks). I'm not getting my hopes up. The sensible option would be to replace him with Defoe now.

Happy Australian crowd

 Happy Australian crowd
Originally uploaded by bennyonacid.
This was taken towards the end of the game. There was a general feeling of contentment amongst the crowd, but bored contentment nonetheless. The second half was rubbish. But we were on to our 6th schooner by then, and someone else was paying (company night out) so it was a good result for us.

And at the end of the day football was the winner.

Now the Socceroonies are off on a plane to their next game against Holland which should be interesting. Certainly should be a harder opponent for them than Greece were yesterday.

They didn't look like a team that have a chance to proceed to the second round, especially facing Japan, Brazil and Croatia. I think their only chance is with a win against Japan in their first game, and then either a miraculous result against Brazil or hoping that the other games go their way. It's going to be a tough ask either way.

I am now officially excited about the World Cup.

Grimace of delight from an Australian supporter

<div style="float: right; The England games are on at 11pm or 2am over here, so the last thing I want to do is witness an historic England victory, then waltz in to work after 4 pints at 9am with a day full of meetings. No, those days will all be about blogging and trips to the pub at lunchtime.

I am going to charge up the camera batteries and start snapping WC gubberama that I have seen recently such as Japanese students wearing Germany football tops (why oh why), keyrings for sale in the local BP garage and pictures of Harry Kewell on every sodding bus shelter.

Oh, and I joined our work footy tipping contest. $20 to enter and I am going to win.

Bringeth it on...

17 days 23 hours 41 minutes to go...

It's all heating up now. I'm feeling the pressure. The pressure to keep on top of events, to know who's who and what's what. I've read an interview with Rio Ferdinand where he talks about his urine test in a room with a grinning Ronaldinho after the 2002 quarter final. Pele's got an album coming out. It sounds quite interesting, unlike Stan Boardman's World Cup song, which I heard accidentally - "singing ay-yay-yippee-yippee/ the Germans bombed our chippy". A blatant flouting of the don't mention the war clause. The Rooney toe situation's looking hopeful. Posters and ads are everywhere (must take some pictures). Also, must get World Cup mug from PG Tips (or is it Typhoo?) Have downloaded in-depth World Cup history and squad details onto my iPod. Entered competition to win tickets. Read up on the Berlin's Currywurst and Kaiserslauten's Pferdwurst (horsemeat sausage), mmm. Watched a report on Trindad & Tobago... selected my ideal Australian team... bought some more stickers... I feel ready.

Thanks to Dr Han (Super football fans) for the comment on the previous post. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention.

2, During the World Cup, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse of the remote control, you will lose it (your eye).

3, If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don’t mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without distracting me. If you decide to stand nude in front of the TV, make sure you put clothes on right after because if you catch a cold, I wont have time to take you to the doctor or look after you during the World Cup month.

4, During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. You are out of your mind if you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the baby that just fell from the second floor... it wont happen.

5, It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on, and please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12am and 6am, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day.

6. Please, please, please!! if you see me upset because one of my teams is losing, DO NOT say “get over it, its only a game”, or “don’t worry, they’ll win next time”. If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about football than me and your so called “words of encouragement” will only lead to a break up or divorce.

7, You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the halftime score is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying “one” game, hence do not use the World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse to “spend time together”.

8, The replays of the goals are very important. I don’t care if I have seen them or I haven’t seen them, I want to see them again. Many times.

9, Tell your friends NOT to have any babies, or any other child related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because:
a) I will not go,
b) I will not go, and
c) I will not go.
But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to watch a game, we will be there in a flash.

10, The daily World Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying “but you have already seen this...why don’t you change the channel to something we can all watch??”, the reply will be: “Refer to Rule #2 of this list”.

11, And finally, please save your expressions such as “Thank God the World Cup is only every 4 years”. I am immune to these words, because after this comes the Champions League, Premier League, Italian League, Spanish League, etc etc.

12, Thank you for your co-operation.

Regards,
Men of the World

Bring back Sheringham. Leave Rooney behind. Say sorry pal, you're not going to make it. Stay at home and put your feet up and watch it on the telly like the rest of us, and try not to get too upset.

But who to take instead? My idea, which is mine, and may not be any good because I haven't had anything eat today is to take six strikers. Give them all a chance in the first round games. Rotate and substitute like nobody's business - 30 minutes each - one of them's bound to do something. She received the Queen's baton... and sprinted up the steps with it... 71 competing nations... who knew there are 71 nations in the Commonwealth? [The Queen probably.] I doubt if I could come up with more than 10. Must be a lot of little islands and that.

I dunno, maybe Guernsey or something is counted as a nation.

Former Neighbours star Delta Goodrem sang 'Together We Are One', co-written with boyfriend and former Westlife singer Brian McFadden. National Anthem yeah yeah... swagman... the Queen (Gawd bless her).

Missing ... Ian Thorpe ... Paula Radcliffe.

The ceremony began with the surreal sight of a winged tram landing in the centre of the Melbourne Cricket Ground... a picture please...

The Queen, dressed in gold ... gold! from head to toe like in the Kanye West song... and accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh (God bless him, miserable old tosser)...

She watched as the ceremony continued with a boy being led on a magical adventure by a toy duck, featuring scenes evoking Australia's cultural heritage.

yeah... a magical adventure... a toy duck...

Anyway, Cathy Freeman, fireworks display ... 86 days to the World Cup...

Cheers, Trevor McDonald.

From the SBS website:
We are hunting for a song to inspire the team to glory in their 2006 World Cup campaign. Sven spilled the beans to a News of the World scumbag dressed as an Arab. He's naive, he should have known better! The NOTW recorded it all! He said what we all kind of know and suspect, but it's very embarrassing and he's had to spend his Sunday ringing all the players and saying sorry. Sorry I said you're only at Newcastle for the money Michael. Sorry I said you come from a rough backgrond and you've got a bad temper Wayne. Sorry I said you're a bit lazy Rio. Sorry I said you're frustrated with Real Madrid's lack of progress David. Sorry everybody, I said I'll be leaving after the World Cup, I won't really!

On a brighter note, Arsenal have signed a Togoan. (Togolese?) He's from Togo anyway, and he's called Emmanuel Adebayor, and he's going to be in the World Cup, so that'll mean Togo games will be even more exciting (for me) than before. Togo v Switzerland in Dortmund on the 19th June... surely one to miss? No, two Arsenal players will be in it!
