World Cup 2006

Tuesday, December 20, 2005

I see that Ronaldinho just got Fifa's player of the year for the second time running. Is that really fair. I mean think of all of those other players out there who could have done with a leg up (or a Beinschuss) at the end of the season.

To quote another famous Brazillian, "hello, uh hulloh, I am a goof, ha ha, hello!"*

*Note: this quote is not meant to offend Brazillians, but rather take the p**s out of Graham when he used to do Ronaldo impressions during the World Cup in 2002.

According to Babelfish, "Beinschuss" is a "Leg Shot".

Practice your German

Ein Spieler befindet sich in Abseitsstellung, wenn er der gegnerischen Torlinie näher ist als der Ball und der vorletzte Abwehrspieler = A player is in an offside position if he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than the ball and the second last opponent

Er verpasste seinem Gegner einen Beinschuss = He nutmegged his opponent

Those crazy Aussies. When the local coverage cut back from Leipzig to the Australian studio, they brought Group F (of death) up on the screen and said "well, it's a good result for us, that's got to be the strongest group of them all".

What I think they meant to say was "Jesus Christ - that's the last f***ing group on earth that we want to be in mate, cobber, kangaroo and chips", but it didn't come out like that.

I now need to start working on where to see the first game.

And I need to start taking some more photos of football related trickery.

Bah. I couldn't make England win it. We'll have to beat Germany in the second round then Argentina in the quarters. Sven might as well resign now. The sneaky Czechs did well. In other news, Australia were on the first plane home.

The World Cup Draw - live from an industrial estate 5 hours outside Leipzig!

For one reason or another I couldn't attend, or watch it on TV, so I was relying on various Local and International Contacts to Deliver the News to me. Which they did. Although someone had a WAP phone so I found out that way. Bring on the Tabago!

15 hours until the World Cup draw....

I'd like to see an England v Australia draw. Everyone has been asking me "so if England draw against Australia, who are you going to cheer for? Ha ha ah hahha hahh ahha haha hahahahghh" etc etc.

Smile and nod.

I have become a shameless whore when it comes to supporting most things Australian like swimming, golf and bowls, but not football. I mean, come on.

It's still called Soccer out here after all.

I had 3 beers at lunch. And 8 yesterday.
